Record breaking!

Tonight, Serbia is on top of the world. The Water polo National Team has become World Champion for an amazing fifth time, second since the country’s independence.

Two out of the best three players of the Championship are Serbs. Andrija Prlainović, as this year’s MVP, and Branislav Mitrović, as the Championship’s best goalkeeper.

This is Serbia’s third gold in barely a year’s time, uniting the European gold in Budapest, during the summer of 2014, the World League in Bergamo in July, and now, another World Championship title.

Slobodan Nikić, the strong center and standard member of the National Team for over a decade (since 2003) has now become world’s most decorated water polo player. By now, he has won a total of 27 medals, among which we should name: 5 European golds, 3 World golds, an Olympic silver (2004, Athens), and bronze (London, 2012), 9 World league gold medals… And counting.

Serbia’s coach, Dejan Savić, is so far the most capped player of the Serbian National Team, and owner of a world title, as a player, in 2005.

Tonight’s victory over Croatia by 11-4 is also the biggest blowout victory (with the largest point difference), since the competition was established in 1973.

The next big competition for the successful team will be on home ground. The 2016 European Championship will be held in Belgrade, where the Dolphins will attempt to continue their truly impressive series of trophies, before the culmination of the Olympic cycle, in Rio de Janeiro.
